Japan and Spain.

For me, these two cultures have always been connected by memory.

I spent part of my childhood in Spain, surrounded by Spanish furniture and tableware that still fill my family home today. The designs were expressive and full of character. They had a presence of their own, and they became part of the visual world I grew up with.

As I grew older, I found myself drawn to the patterns found in traditional Japanese clothing.

The traditional Japanese Hitta-kanoko pattern, with its delicate arrangement of small dots. Rikyū-bai, inspired by the graceful ume blossom. Chrysanthemums, with their long history in Japanese art and culture.

I began to look at these traditional patterns with a fresh eye, wondering how they might meet the Spanish influences that had shaped my own sense of beauty.

For this collection, I worked once again with Sabina, a Spanish designer whose work I have admired for its distinctive floral language.

This time, I wanted to share my own ideas with her from the very beginning.

Could we bring together the patterns of Japanese kimono with the spirit of Spanish flamenco dress?

Could the visual memories of Spain I grew up with meet the Japanese patterns I have come to love?

There was one more element I wanted to include.

Flowers.

I have always been drawn to the flowers Sabina creates. They feel free, expressive, and full of life. I asked her to bring her flowers into this design.

We also incorporated polka dots, a pattern closely associated with flamenco dress and familiar within Spanish visual culture.

Something interesting happened.

The Spanish polka dots began to speak to the Japanese Hitta-kanoko pattern.

Both are built from small dots coming together to create a larger pattern.

Two traditions, from two very different places, suddenly felt connected.

Japanese Hitta-kanoko. Spanish polka dots. And Sabina’s flowers.

Each element comes from a different place, yet they meet naturally on a single piece of cloth.

Perhaps it was the flowers that brought Japan and Spain together.

Perhaps it was the dots.

Or perhaps it was the simple act of sharing our memories, ideas, and ways of seeing beauty.

We named this design HANA-MUSUBI.

Hana means flower. Musubi means to tie, to connect, to bring together.

Flowers connecting Japan and Spain. Flowers connecting two creative minds. Flowers connecting memories of the past with the way we live today.

Different traditions. Different memories. Different expressions of beauty.

Brought together in one piece of cloth.

HANA-MUSUBI.

A meeting of Japanese patterns and Spanish flowers, tied together by a shared love of beauty.
