Hand Printing Technique Called “Tenassen”

Our Furoshiki are all carefully dyed by our artisans using a Japanese hand printing technique called “tenassen”. It’s a delicate, beautiful and time consuming process performed by Japanese craftsmen and the results of this wonderful traditional technique are incomparable to digital print done using machines.

Tenassen uses a silk screen to dye the cloth 1 color at a time. When making detailed designs, it has the merit of being usable on any kind of cloth, and dyeing both sides beautiful colors. (High end brand name silk scarves and other items are made in the same studio.) Cloth with digital print has its ink printed on its surface, meaning most only have a surface level print than can come off with time. Digital is cheaper but the difference this makes in the finished product is clear.

After our furoshiki are hand printed, they are carefully washed one by one. The reason there’s no color loss over time is because of how we carefully process and make them.

All our Furoshiki is handprinted by passionate Japanese craftsmen, using this screen paint technique on 100% cotton.
