The designs were expressive and full of character. They had a presence of their own, and they became part of the visual world I grew up with.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eAs I grew older, I found myself drawn to the patterns found in traditional Japanese clothing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eThe traditional Japanese Hitta-kanoko pattern, with its delicate arrangement of small dots. Rikyū-bai, inspired by the graceful ume blossom. Chrysanthemums, with their long history in Japanese art and culture.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eI began to look at these traditional patterns with a fresh eye, wondering how they might meet the Spanish influences that had shaped my own sense of beauty.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eFor this collection, I worked once again with Sabina, a Spanish designer whose work I have admired for its distinctive floral language.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eThis time, I wanted to share my own ideas with her from the very beginning.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eCould we bring together the patterns of Japanese kimono with the spirit of Spanish flamenco dress?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eCould the visual memories of Spain I grew up with meet the Japanese patterns I have come to love?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eThere was one more element I wanted to include.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eFlowers.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eI have always been drawn to the flowers Sabina creates. They feel free, expressive, and full of life. I asked her to bring her flowers into this design.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eWe also incorporated polka dots, a pattern closely associated with flamenco dress and familiar within Spanish visual culture.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eSomething interesting happened.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eThe Spanish polka dots began to speak to the Japanese Hitta-kanoko pattern.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eBoth are built from small dots coming together to create a larger pattern.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eTwo traditions, from two very different places, suddenly felt connected.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoBodyText\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eJapanese Hitta-kanoko. Spanish polka dots.
